IP (ingress protection) protection grade system is drafted by IEC (International Electrical Communication), which classifies electrical appliances according to their dust-proof and moisture-proof characteristics. IP protection level is composed of two numbers. The first number represents the level of dust prevention and foreign object intrusion prevention of electrical appliances (foreign objects including tools and human fingers are not allowed to touch the live parts in electrical appliances to avoid electric shock). The second number represents the tightness of electrical appliances against moisture and water immersion. The larger the number, the higher the protection level. The IP protection grade system provides a method to classify products based on the dust-proof, waterproof and anti-collision degree of electrical equipment and packaging. This system has been recognized by most European countries, drafted by IEC (International Electro technical Commission) and announced in the IP code of ied529 (BS EN 60529:1992).
IP protection level is usually expressed by two numbers followed by IP, which are used to clarify the protection level. The first digit indicates the range of dust resistance of the equipment, or the degree to which people are protected from hazards in a sealed environment. Represents the level of preventing the entry of solid foreign matters, and the highest level is 6; The second digit indicates how waterproof the equipment is. Represents the level of water prevention, and the highest level is 8.
Overview of IP dustproof and waterproof test
Nowadays, it is common for consumer electronic products to be labeled with dust-proof and waterproof labels, which are usually completed through IP grade standards, including IP68, ip57, ipx7, ip5x and so on.
Different products require different levels of testing and different types of testing. Generally, IP protection is divided into foreign matter or liquid entry test. For many products, the most likely point of failure occurs at the joint between two components. IP dustproof and waterproof test is used to test the product's ability to prevent the penetration of water, dust and foreign matters.
Purpose and application of IP dustproof and waterproof test
There are several reasons for doing IP dustproof and waterproof test, including security, functionality and product marketing.
Many products need to be insulated from external components to work properly. These external factors include fog, steam, water spray, sand, oil, and even fingers, to name a few. IP dustproof and waterproof test helps to determine whether a specific product can operate normally when used on site.
Dust proof test is mainly used for sand and dust simulation test of low-voltage electrical appliances, motors, instruments, instruments, electronic products and lamps. Sand and dust test test is to evaluate the sealing performance of mobile phones, electrical products and other products in sand and dust environment and the sealing performance of automobile, motorcycle parts, sealed sand and dust test pieces in use, storage and transportation in sand and dust environment.
The waterproof test is used to determine the effectiveness of the protective cover or protective shell to prevent rain infiltration, the ability of the equipment to meet its performance requirements during or after rain exposure, the physical damage of the equipment due to rain, and the effectiveness of the rainwater drainage system.

Meaning of IP dustproof and waterproof test level
IP class or entrance protection is formulated by IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). They are used to define the level of sealing effect of the electrical enclosure against the invasion of foreign matters, including dust and moisture. Each number after the IP has a specific meaning. The first indicates the degree of protection of closed equipment against foreign objects. The second defines the level of protection of the enclosure from various forms of moisture.
Resistance to foreign matter and dust
Ip1x: effective for foreign matters larger than 50mm.
IP2X: effective for foreign matters greater than 12.5mm.
IP3X: effective for foreign matters greater than 2.5mm.
IP4X: effective for foreign matters greater than 1mm.
Ip5x: dustproof. Some dust may pass through, but it is not enough to damage the product.
Ip6x: completely dustproof.
Moisture resistance
Ipx1: prevent water droplets falling vertically for 10 minutes, equivalent to 1 mm of rainfall per minute.
Ipx2: when inclined 15 ° from the normal position, the equipment can be prevented from soaking in water for 10 minutes. Equivalent to 3 mm of rainfall per minute.
IPx3: the water falls in a spray shape at 60 degrees from the vertical direction for 10 minutes. Water volume: 10 liters per minute. Pressure: 50 – 150 kPa.
IPx4: water splashes on the shell from any direction for 10 minutes. Water volume: 10 liters per minute. Pressure (50-150kpa).
Ipx5: the nozzle (6.3 mm) sprays water to the housing from any direction for 3 minutes. Water volume: 12.5 liters per minute pressure: 30 kPa.
Ipx6: water is sprayed onto the shell with a powerful jet (12.5mm) from any direction for 3 minutes. Water volume: 100 liters per minute pressure: 100 kPa.
Ipx7: immerse in 1m deep water for 30 minutes.
Ipx8: soak in 1m deep water for more than 1 hour. The manufacturer will specify the exact service conditions according to the model.
Handling process of IP dust and waterproof test report
1. Business consultation: the applicant provides product data and test requirements to a third-party testing organization;
2. Project quotation: according to the information provided by the applicant, the engineer makes an evaluation and makes an oral quotation to the applicant;
3. Provide data: after the applicant accepts the oral quotation, the test samples shall be submitted to the third-party testing organization;
4. Payment: Send a written quotation to the applicant after receiving the sample, and the applicant will arrange payment according to the written quotation;
5. Sample test: conduct product test according to applicable standards;
6. Issue report: after the test is completed, the laboratory issues the third-party CNAs test report and closes the case.
